What is a Transfer Case?

If you have an all-wheel-drive (AWD) or four-wheel-drive (4WD), the transfer case is what makes shifting into the off-road mode possible. Without a transfer case, you’d just have a two-wheel drive.

The transfer case is a separate type of transmission. Within the housing, it utilizes a chain or gears to adjust the vehicle’s gear ratio, so it has the needed traction for tough road conditions. It transfers the transmission’s power to both front and rear axles in order to adjust speed. As it slows the vehicle’s speed, the wheels are able to turn at the same time.

Seals can wear out with time. If you notice oil leaks or problems shifting gears, it may be time to have your vehicle serviced. Stop by our service center at Weikert Ford Inc. the next time you’re in Wahpeton, ND. Our technicians are always here to answer questions!
